Howlin' Wolf: Howling Wolf Sings The Blues (LP-Japan)

(P-Vine Records) 12 tracks.

Howlin' Wolf, a wolf who lived the blues tenaciously and single-mindedly. This LP reissue of an album compiled from his 1951 and 1952 recordings for the modern label RPM and released in 1962 on Crown Records, also a modern label. The album features: Willie Johnston on guitar, playing a veritable mix of primitive Delta blues and offbeat jazz chords; Willie Steele on drums and unknown musicians providing unparalleled backing; and Ike Turner on vibrant piano, belting out a wild and hard blues to Wolf in West Memphis. The piano was out of tune, the guitar was out of tune and the harmonica was out of tune, but it was pounding and beautiful - there was no bigger shock. Early in his career, making his recording debut after the age of 40, Bruce's wolf howl is certainly overwhelming. His later Chicago recordings (Chess), with his partner Hubert Sumlin's guitar flying through the air, are also superb, but there's nothing quite like the charm of this wild wolf from the Memphis era. Presented in Crown's famous 'Beauty Jacket' specification (*Note: The content is 100% pure, raw southern blues. Please handle with care).

Howling Wolf

Come Back Home

The first two bars set the tone for the entire record. That very countryish guitar figure will work its way through the chord changes of this 12-bar blues. It's the glue that holds this performance together.

If you listen closely, you'll recognize the tone on that guitar (a pleasant blend of acoustic and ampli- fied) from Track 12. It's blues combo man Willie Johnson, who made his greatest mark as Howlin' Wolf's lead guitar player. And the vocalist here is none other than Chester Burnett, a/k/a The Howlin' Wolf.

The track is called Come Back Home, a title that could have been replaced by half a dozen other phrases from the song. This is little more than a string of vocal blues clichés, made distinctive by the Wolf's vocal stylings (he could have recited the Helena phone directory and gathered a crowd) and the repetitive force of John- son's guitar figure. The truth is, the con- tinuity of that figure is the only thing to suggest this performance is a "song" and not merely a blues jam.
