Rocky Hill (1946-2009) is my favorite electric guitarist and in the summer of 1977 I was "managing" him, a man often described as "unmanageable". I was managing Townes Van Zandt then also and decided to make an album with Rocky, have him cut some of Townes' songs. What could go wrong? Older brother to the late ZZ Top's Dusty and mentor to both Stevie Ray Vaughan and Doyle Bramhall II, Rocky never earned the acclaim his talent merited.

The same could be said of Doyle Bramhall (1949-2011) who shines here on both vocals and drums. His band, The Nightcrawlers, formed with Marc Benno, launched Stevie Ray's career. Do* later played drums for and wrote songs with Vaughan. Additionally, his son has become a mega rock producer/guitarist whose credits include Elton John, Roger Waters and Eric Clapton.

Bassist Dobie Malone, first heard nationally on Archie Bell & The Drells smash hit, "Tighten Up", has performed steadily since these recordings, backing many other "name" artists in many musical styles. We tracked these sides a month before making the CD released in Europe in 2012 as LONE STAR LEGEND, reissued on vinyl in 2020 via SFL/709 Recordings. Those sides were made with members of Delbert McClinton's band and we did cut Van Zandt's "Waiting Around to Die" and "Tower Song".. . If you haven't heard one of Rocky's four albums, this is why he is my favorite electric axeman. Tone. He created a muscular, majestic tone with just fingers and strings, no pedals needed. Mix that regal sound with his encyclopedic knowledge of the blues . . . well, put this on and just listen!

While this is a Rocky Hill album, as I listened I realized it does present a trio's cohesion, hence the three name title. Alas, the Hill-Bramhall-Malone trio only played a few shows, no live recordings have surfaced. Rocky fans will be overjoyed to hear 11 vintage recordings showcasing his string-bending skill. Here are the first recordings of "Hoodoo Eyes", "Bad Year for the Blues", "New York Turnaround", "Take My Love" and "Where Do the Blues Come From". Bramhall followers will be ecstatic to hear Doyle brilliantly singing "Good Morning Little School Girl", "New York Turnaround" and his own "Her Turn To Cry". The icing on this vinyl cake is Rocky's work on "Catfish Blues" and classics from Muddy Waters, Blind Willie McTell and Freddy King, a Hill mentor.

These grooves present clear evidence why Rocky Hill and Doyle Bramhall, ably supported here by Dobie Malone, are considered among the greatest blues/rock musicians in history. HOUSTON BLUES THROWDOWN presents the only recordings to feature Rocky and Doyle, so sit back and enjoy the magical moments they deliver here, highlights from two hot Houston nights! — John Lomax III, Nashville 08/ 30/ 21
