Who was/is Dick Heckstall ? - CDs, Vinyl LPs, DVD and more

Dick Heckstall was born on Sept. 26, 1934. At school he led a traditional jazz band and played clarinet and so-prano saxophone. After taking up tenor saxophone in Sandy Brown's jazz band and doing a stint with a rock'n'roll group at Butlin's holiday camps, he worked freelance until 1962 when he joined Blues Incorporated.

From there he moved to Graham Bond's breakaway Organization and then on to John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, eventually forming Colosseum with Mayall's drummer, Jon Hiseman. When Colosseum broke up in 1971, he returned to freelance work, though for a while he led his own group. Heckstall-Smith made two solo albums on Bronze, A Story Ended (1972) and Manchild (1973).
