Lee Hazlewood made his name as a producer and co-writer with guitarist Duane Eddy in the 1950s and then cemented his immortality with the classic recordings he produced for Nancy Sinatra in the 1960s. In recent decades, however, attention has shifted to Lee's idiosyncratic solo work, the centerpiece of which he recorded for the Reprise label and his own LHI Records label. Released in 1968, “Love and Other Crimes” is one of his Reprise releases and one of the strangest records in his entire catalog. Hazlewood, who recorded in Paris with legendary members of the Wrecking Crew like guitarist James Burton and drummer Hal Blaine, sounds like a bon vivant (read: half drunk) as he shifts from country ballads to slightly psychedelic pop, highlighted by his rocking cover of Bonnie Dobson's “Morning Dew.” Other highlights include “Rosacoke Street,” which showcases him at his most psychedelic lounge-lizard style (think a Hunter Thompson character from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas), and his moving “Wait and See,” an apology for bad behavior to an absent lover. Lee Hazelwood, geboren 1929 in Mannford, Oklahoma, ging an die Southern Methodist University, bevor die Armee ihn nach Korea brachte. Nach seiner Entlassung 1953 wurde er einer der beliebtesten DJs in Phoenix, Arizona, wo er C&W-Musik lokal ausstrahlte. 1955 begann er mit dem Songwriting und begann nach Experimenten in seinem Radiostudio mit der Plattenproduktion. Seine Produktion von'The Fool' von Sanford Clark verkaufte sich 1956 auf Dot Records und Dot unterschrieb ihn ein Jahr lang als Plattenproduzent, aber er schaffte keinen weiteren Hit. 1957 gründete er zusammen mit dem Unternehmer Lester Sill das Label Jamie in Philadelphia mit einem Distributor und Dick Clark von Bandstand.

Über Bandstand lancierten sie Duane Eddy mit dem'twangy' Gitarrensound, der ihn zum Star machte. In dreieinhalb Jahren verkaufte Hazelwood 20 Millionen Duane Eddy Platten, die trotz ihrer krassen Kommerzialisierung die ersten'Sound'-Produktionen im Rock waren. 1961 gründeten Hazelwood und Sill das Gregmark-Label, das mit von Phil Spector produzierten Platten der Paris Sisters punktete (Sill und Hazelwood hatten zuvor zwei weniger erfolgreiche Labels namens Trey und East-West geführt). Sie trennten sich 1962 und Hazelwood gründete ein erfolgloses Label, Eden.

1964 verließ er das Unternehmen, doch im folgenden Jahr bat ihn Jimmy Bowen bei Reprise, das Bubblegum-Trio von Dino, Desi und Billy zu produzieren, für das er vier aufeinanderfolgende Hits produzierte. Er fing auch an, Nancy Sinatra bei Reprise aufzunehmen und etablierte sie als starke Chart-Kraft mit'These Boots Are Made For Walkin' und nahm mit ihr Country-Duette wie'Jackson' auf. In den späten sechziger Jahren führte er sein eigenes LHI-Label in Hollywood, aber der Mangel an Erfolg beendete das Projekt.
