Kaz Hawkins: My Life And I (CD)
Listening to her voice, one feels transported to the banks of the Mississippi, to the streets of Clarksdale or Memphis, in the company of the great singers of blues, soul, folk, funk, rhythm 'n blues.... all rooted in the fervor of gospel choirs.
Hawkins, born in Northern Ireland in 1973, learned her craft in the bars of Belfast, where her father took her. Amid the chaos of a country plagued by segregation and civil war, Kaz took her first steps as a musician. Today, she lives in France.
To understand the artist's emotions, which make up the intensity of her singing, one must go back in time. To the time of a little girl who secretly wrote poetry to forget the pain caused by the suffering of the riots. Those were years marked by violence and left scars. "Music was my refuge, like a comforter! When I sing, I feel safe. My past has made me the artist I am, but it doesn't define me," she says.
Inspired by Etta James' Saint Louis Blues, which her grandmother loved, Kaz still gives herself to music today. She keeps alive a symbolic legacy that led her to take the name of the woman who had always inspired her (Etta James was born Jamesetta Hawkins).
And so her concerts began with cover versions of Etta James. Aretha Franklin and Joe Cocker also quickly became part of her now diverse repertoire.
My Life and I kicks off with Pray, a great moment of communion with an a cappella gospel choir, as does Hallelujah Happy People or "Feeling' Good," before she pays tribute to the pain of the past in One more Fight or the heartbreaking Surviving.
The powerful tone of Kaz's voice, with its raspy accents, also finds tenderness in Because You Love Me, a tender love letter from a mother to her daughter leaving home, recorded with only piano and voice. After the energetic Drink With The Devil, she takes us into the calm waters of The River That Sings before inviting us to the upbeat rhythm of Shake.
Kaz selected a total of 13 original songs for My Life and I. In addition, she recorded 4 tracks as cover versions that are particularly close to her heart. These are Feeling Good, written by Anthony Newly and Leslie Bricusse, two Etta James covers Something's Gotta Hold On Me and At Last and the breathtaking cover version of Full Force Gale by her countryman Van Morrison.
