Groundhogs

1962 von Sänger und Gitarrist Tony McPhee (geboren 22. 3.1944 in Humberstone) gegründete Bluesgruppe. Mitspieler in diesen Anfangstagen war noch Bassist Peter Cruikshank (geboren 2. 7.1945 in Kalkutta). Immer wieder wechselten die Musiker, bis McPhee seine Formation um 1966 auflöste und sich anderen Gruppen anschloß.

1968 jedoch waren die Groundhogs wieder da. McPhee hatte eingesehen, daß er seine Musik nur in seiner Gruppe spielen konnte, wenngleich das auch eine Menge mehr an Ärger und Verantwortung einbrachte. McPhee tendierte in dieser Zeit zu politisch engagierten Texten, die nicht immer in das Blues-Schema hineinpaßten. Dadurch wurde die Gruppe mit der Zeit immer rockiger. Ein Erfolg blieb allerdings aus durch die mangelhafte Promotion und Firmenpolitik der Plattenfirma. Als McPhee den Auftrag für Filmmusiken bekam und sogar in einem Streifen eine Rolle übernehmen sollte, versprach er sich davon mehr und löste seine Gruppe Anfang März 1975 auf.
