"Dick's Picks Vol. 2" has always been one of our favorite songs here at Real Gone, and not just because one of our two partners spent much of his misspent youth at the place where it was recorded, the Ohio Theatre in Columbus, Ohio. If you've never been there, it's one of those great movie palaces from the 1920s. It's the kind of place where it's easy to imagine ghosts wandering around.... for example, on a Halloween night when a band called the Grateful Dead is performing.

For on this 1971 night - captured on this single CD release of the entire "Dick's Picks" series, here on a three-sided double LP - the group played the most ethereal, dreamy and, yes, spooky version of "Dark Star" ever recorded; it's almost as if Jerry Garcia is communing with his ancestors (and perhaps John Coltrane) in the first seven minutes of his beautifully textured, contemplative and wistful solo. Then, after the vocal verse, Garcia, rhythm guitarist Bob Weir and bassist Phil Lesh take turns suggesting a new improvisational theme before the band telepathically picks up a two-note theme and Garcia launches into some of the most ecstatic guitar playing ever captured on tape (some call it the "Tighten Up" jam after the Archie Bell & the Drells song; others hear an embryonic "Eyes of the World"). The rest of the show continues to fly high; the whole band is on fire during "Sugar Magnolia," a rare, early '70s performance of "St. Stephen" (the last live version until 1976) sways as it should, and a great "Not Fade Away"/"Goin' Down the Road Feeling Bad"/"Not Fade Away" medley rounds out the show.... a truly "holy" performance.

"Dick's Picks Vol. 2" has already been released on vinyl in a very limited run, but this release was cut from the CD files. Well, as they say, "Lordy, there are tapes!" Jeffrey Norman of Mockingbird Mastering has taken on the original Scotch reel-to-reel tapes (pictured on the inside gatefold) to bring you a brand new master of this absolutely fantastic show. The guys at Well Made Music, Clint Holley and Dave Polster, cut the lacquers, and guess what? This baby was pressed on 180-gram black vinyl at Gotta Groove Records, which is headquartered in - yeah, right - Columbus. And while we know this pick like the back of our hand, we swear we heard some new stuff this time around, and oh, that Garcia guitar sound! This is where the vinyl advantage comes into play.
