"Barnabas von Géczy & sein Orchester"

Barnabas von Géczy, der gebürtige Ungar, galt als musikalisches Wunderkind. Er hatte mit fünf Jahren Geigenunterricht erhalten, mit acht Jahren trat er bereits öffentlich auf, mit 12 begann er ein Studium an der Budapester Akademie der Tonkunst, mit 15 war er zweiter Geiger der Budapester Symphoniker. Nach dem Ende des Ersten Weltkriegs, an dem er als Freiwilliger teilgenommen hatte, nahm er seine Musikerkarriere als Erster Geiger des Orchesters der Budapester Oper wieder auf.

Die Inflation beendete vorerst die brillante Karriere, und Géczy nahm ein Engagement als Stehgeiger in einem Hotel in Trondheim, Norwegen, an. 1924 kam der Geiger nach Berlin, wo er ein Jahr später eine eigene Kapelle gründete. Im selben Jahr wurde er als Orchesterleiter vom Hotel Esplanade engagiert, eine Position, die er bis 1937 behielt. In diesen Jahren machte der 'Paganini des 5-Uhr-Tees', wie er genannt wurde, mit seinem Orchester viele Plattenaufnahmen und unternahm Gastspielreisen ins europäische Ausland. Anfang 1944 wurde der Geiger Leiter des Deutschen Tanz- und Unterhaltungsorchesters in Prag.
