His second one for Delmark, also produced by Dave Specter, is an album with two sides. One shows Freund the skilled and powerful guitar player, delivering a set of standard style Chicago blues. Alright, but nothing new these days. On some occasions, though he really takes off, especially on an instrumental trading licks with Dave. I wish he would 'turn loose' more often ... In '74 guitarist Steve Freund drove to Chicago non-stop from Brooklyn and proceeded to establish himself on the blues scene as he worked and/or recorded with a pantheon of the city's greatest legends like Sunnyland Slim, Big Walter Horton, Luther Allison, Koko Taylor, James Cotton... He moved to California in the mid '90s but continues to return to Chicago annually to perform. During his '99 visit Steve recorded his debut album as leader for Delmark, 'C' For Chicago (Delmark 734). Steve's brand new CD I'll Be Your Mule features seven new songs. 'I have written songs that are a true part of my life experience, and I have covered the ones that helped me get through this life.'

Steve Freund. . .born and raised in Brooklyn, reborn a Chicagoan the day he stepped off the bus here in 1976. The list of people he's worked with since reads like a Who's Who of Chicago blues legends: Sunnyland Slim, Luther Allison, Lonnie Brooks, Otis Rush, Koko Taylor, Jimmy Walker, Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson, Johnny Littlejohn, the late Big Walter Horton - you name them, Freund's played with them, always adding, inventing and tastefully pushing each tune.

Perhaps the most telling indication of Steve's talent is the cluster of top Chicago bluesmen that gather near the stage when he's on - watching and listening, shouting encouragement, sometimes shaking their heads in amazement. His upfront performance here inspires just such a reaction. His guitar soothes you one moment, stings you the next. His singing is smooth and relaxed. And his leadership, so crucial to the creation of this record, is strongly evident in every beat, every note, of every song.
