Aus Toronto, Kanada, gründeten Schulkameraden und Mitglieder der St. Michael's Choir School, Corrado "Connie" Codarini, Bass; John Bernard "Bernie" Toorish, Tenor; James F. "Jimmy" Arnold, Lead; und Frank "Frankie" Busseri, Bariton, The Four Dukes, um Pop, Spirituals und Folksongs zu singen. Da sich bereits eine Gruppe aus Detroit The Four Dukes nannte, änderten die Jungs ihren Namen in The Four Lads. (Zwei andere Mitglieder der ersten Stunde, Rudi Maugeri und John Perkins - sie gehörten der Gruppe an, als sie noch The Otnorots, Toronto rückwärts buchstabiert, hießen - hatten die Gruppe verlassen, um The Crew Cuts zu gründen, die durch Sh-Boom bekannt wurden).

1950 begann die Gruppe, in lokalen Clubs zu singen, und wurde bald zum Stadtgespräch. Ein Engagement in New York machte Mitch Miller auf sie aufmerksam, der die Four Lads als Backgroundsänger für mehrere seiner Auftritte engagierte. Ihr erster wirklicher Erfolg war die Unterstützung von Johnnie Ray bei seinem großen Hit Cry b/w The Little White Cloud That Cried im Jahr 1951. Ihre erste goldene Schallplatte war Istanbul (Not Constantinople) im Jahr 1953. Danach waren The Four Lads Superstars, die vor allem durch ihren größten Hit Moments to Remember (1955) in Erinnerung blieben.
