As a founding member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, Dom was able to indulge his interest in bringing traditional music to a new audience. On stage, Flemons switches from one instrument to another with a fearless attitude toward tradition and repertoire. Looking back, he says, "The unique experience I had with old-time music really influenced how I was able to process much of it... A few things made me think about how I could connect everything, especially Mike Seeger's way of taking different types of traditional music and putting them together into a new kind of music. And since I was interested in songsters like Lead Belly and Henry Thomas, I listened to them and knew they weren't doing pure blues... These songsters fit into this broader tradition of string bands and folk music, and then there are things like blues and jazz and even gospel music that are included in that." 76 min.
