The pairing of Greenwich Village folkie Richard Fariña with Joan Baez’s youngest sister Mimi was fruitful for only a short time but influential to many musicians, including Fairport Convention and later Iain Matthews. After a politically active period, including living in Cuba, Richard arrived in New York in 1959 at age 23. On meeting Mimi, the pair set off travelling and recorded an album in London with Dylan and Eric von Schmidt. When they returned to the States, they were signed to Vanguard Records who quickly put out two great albums of their eclectic material. Richard’s novel Been Down So Long It Looks Like Up To Me was published soon after, but his death in 1966 put paid to what was sure to be a wonderful career. Mimi went on to a lower profile in music and remained politically active.
