"Spirit" is the seventh studio album by Earth, Wind & Fire, released 45 years ago in 1976 on Columbia Records. The album entered both the Billboard 200 and Top Soul Albums charts at #2, with two singles becoming major hits. "Getaway" reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Soul Songs chart and No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. "Saturday Nite" reached #4 on the Billboard Hot-Soul Song chart and #21 on the Billboard Hot 100. "Spirit" was critically acclaimed, with the New York Times, for example, writing, "The most interesting thing about Maurice White and his musicians is their refusal to commit to any stylistic format."

Many describe the sound of Earth, Wind & Fire as "disco music," but in fact they are closer in parts to jazz or jazz-rock than to the pounding formulas of disco - and "Spirit" has one ballad to offer as well. Issac Hayes called the album one of the five essential recordings of Earth, Wind & Fire. "Spirit" was also nominated for the American Music Award for Best Soul / R&B Album. A song from the album titled "Earth, Wind and Fire" was also nominated for a Grammy in the category of Best Instrumental Composition.
