Formed in eighth grade for a talent show at their school, the Donnas began as a self-proclaimed coed answer to the Ramones, playing gleefully unapologetic pop-punk anthems to teenage alienation and hedonism from a decidedly female perspective. But by the time they released their sixth album Gold Medal in 2004, their second for major label Atlantic, the group had clearly - dare we say it? - matured. With the notable exception of the single (and career highlight) “Fall Behind Me”, Gold Medal marks a departure from the harder/faster ethos of the Donnas in favor of a more polished (acoustic guitars...waaas?) pop sound that veers towards '70s psychedelia under the direction of Avril Lavigne producer Butch Walker. And you can see that in the album's artwork, which features vintage Peter Max-style squiggles on the cover and a faux blacklight poster inside (which we reproduced for this reissue along with the original printed inner sleeve). The result was an album that vocalist Brett Anderson a.k.a Donna A. calls her favorite and probably the most underrated album in the band's fabulous catalog (most of which we've recently released here at Real Gone Music). Our reissue comes in gold smoke vinyl ... an overlooked gem from the early 2000s!
