The Hillmen – The Hillmen is an important release from Chris Hillman’s early career and a remarkable document of American bluegrass. The recordings were made in 1963 and 1964 and were originally issued in 1970 as an 11-track LP. This expanded Liberation Hall CD adds six bonus tracks, bringing the total to 17 songs. The lineup features Chris Hillman, Vern and Rex Gosdin and banjo player Don Parmley. The repertoire combines traditional bluegrass material with interpretations of songs by Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie and Maybelle Carter, alongside original compositions by the Gosdin brothers. The track selection includes Fair And Tender Ladies, Winsborough Cotton Mill Blues, Wheel Hoss, When The Ship Comes In, Roll On Muddy River, Ranger’s Command, Barbara Allen, Copper Kettle and Salt Creek. A highly interesting release for fans of bluegrass, Americana and the early musical work of Chris Hillman.
