Iris Dement The Way I Should (CD)

1-CD, 11 tracks. Yep Roc Records. Newly remastered 30th Anniversary Edition.

Originally released in 1996, The Way I Should was Iris DeMent’s third studio album and remains one of the most powerful statements of her career. Thirty years later, Yep Roc Records celebrates this landmark recording with a newly remastered CD edition.

Throughout The Way I Should, DeMent combines her deep Country and Folk roots with remarkably direct social and political observations. “Wasteland of the Free” and “There’s a Wall in Washington” reveal her uncompromising side, while songs such as “When My Mornin’ Comes Around,” “Keep Me God” and “I’ll Take My Sorrow Straight”highlight the intimate and reflective songwriting that has made her such a distinctive voice in American music.

The original sessions also featured an impressive cast of musicians. Delbert McClinton joins DeMent on “Trouble,” while contributors to the album include Mark Knopfler, Merle Haggard and Earl Scruggs.

An essential reissue of a distinctive Americana album whose songs remain strikingly direct three decades after their original release.
