"The Cramps"

The Cramps

The Cramps war eine US-amerikanische Rock'n'Roll Band, die von ihrem Gründungsjahr 1976 bis zum Tod von Sänger Erick Purkhiser alias Lux Interior 2009 aktiv war. Sie kreierten einen eigenwilligen Sound aus Rockabilly, 50s Rock'n'Roll, 60s Garagen Trash und Punk Rock - gemeinhin auch als Punkabilly bezeichnet. Neben Lux Interior blieb seine Ehefrau und Gitarristin Kristy Wallace, alias Poison Ivy, das einzige Bandmitglied, das der Gruppe permanent angehörte.

Kult

Bereits in den späten 1970er Jahre avancierten The Cramps mit ihrem Sound zu einer Kult-Band als Teil der frühen New Yorker Punk Szene um das CBGB. Ihr Kult-Status bis heute ungebrochen ist und sie üben ungeheuren Einfluss auf Musikstile, wie Psychobilly und Horror Punk aus. Die Songtext-Ideen bezogen sie zumeist aus Comics, Groschenromanen und Horror-, Science Fiction- und Sex-B-Movies.

Besetzung und Sound

Neben Lux Interior und Poison Ivy als ständige Basis-Mitglieder, haben in wechselnder Besetzung eine Schar illustrer Musiker bei den Cramps gespielt: Gleich zu Beginn saß Miriam Linna am Schlagzeug, die später mit Billy Miller The Zantees und das Norton Records Label gründete. Langjähriger Schlagzeuger wurde dann Nick Knox. Brian 'Kid Congo Powers' Tristan spielte 1983 die zweite Gitarre, bis er wieder zu seiner eigentlichen Band, The Gun Club, zurückkehrte. Ab Anfang 90er Jahre begann die Band mit dem Bassisten Slim Chance zu spielen. Bis dato hatten sie gänzlich auf den Bass verzichtet. Das gab der Band zusätzlichen Schub im Gesamtklang. The Cramps produzierten sich zumeist selber, jedoch wurden vereinzelte Alben von Richard Robinson (The Flamin' Groovies) in New York und von Alex Chilton in Memphis produziert.
