Johnny Cash was one of the first to explore the idea of the concept album in country music. The songs in this exclusive collection were recorded between 1960 and 1977 and were released on seven concept albums, 'Ride This Train', 'Blood, Sweat and Tears', 'Bitter Tears', 'Ballads Of The True West', 'From Sea To Shining Sea', 'America' and 'The Rambler'. Taken together, these albums are a true and authentic statement of what Johnny Cash was all about, and they came from his most vital and creative period as a singer and songwriter. The songs are Johnny Cash, the quintessential American writing and singing about America.

It is difficult to think of a singer whose music has so often and so eloquently encompassed and embraced so many different perspectives, personas, legends, myths, and emotions of the American experience as Johnny Cash.

Though Cash’s long recording career and immense world-wide popularity have occurred within the context of American country music (occasionally spilling over into the ‘60s and ‘70s American folk/protest revival), his artistic vision, as well as his social consciousness and acute sense of American history, have often reached far beyond country music’s predictable commercial confines.

The 87 songs contained in this four-CD collection have been, for the most part, compiled from seven Johnny Cash LPs originally released between 1960 and 1977 – a period when Cash was at the peak of his artitstic powers and in full flourish as a social commentator, philosopher, humorist, and folk balladeer. These selections also serve to remind us that Cash probably owes as much in terms of sheer influence to past chroniclers of the American experience like Mark Twain, Will Rogers, and Woody Guthrie as he does to more predictable country influences like Jimmie Rodgers, Hank Williams, and Lefty Frizzell.

Throughout his recording career (which now spans five decades), Cash has, time and again, taken his music far beyond the confines of mere entertainment and embarked upon a creative, and often geographic, journey in search of the true spirit of his own past, and America’s past.

This peripatetic journey of self-discovery is one that’s been followed time and again – by everyone from celebrated twentieth-century American authors like John Steinbeck, John Dos Passos, and Jack Kerouac, and William Least Heat Half Moon (author of the best-selling 1982 travelogue, ‘Blue Highway,’ told from an American Indian’s perspective, to contemporary roving American mass media commentators like Charles Kuralt and Bill Moyers.

As Cash himself observed in his eloquent and introspective self-written liner notes to his 1969 ’Sea To Shining Sea’ LP (the title is taken from the song America, an unofficial U.S. national anthem, the words of which every schoolchild knows by heart): “...I sing mainly about things I have heard of, or things and places I have seen.”

The Unites States – as Cash, no doubt, well knows – is a nation endlessly in search of its own past, and in quest of its own long misplaced sense of ‘rural roots’ and some long-lost notion of ‘authenticity.’ This hunger for the past has much to do with the vague, but prevailing sense of rootlessness, displacement, and malaise that runs through the contemporary American culture and is such a recurrent theme in its art, literature, and music...
