Brown's Musical Brownies
When western swing pioneer Milton Brown died after an automobile accident in April 1936, his younger brother Derwood (1915-1968) took over his band, the Musical Brownies. Neither of the Browns sang many Jimmie Rodgers songs; their forté was jazz and pop tunes, avoiding traditional country songs except for the occasional square dance number. The One Rose (That's Left In My Heart) was a current pop tune, written by Hawaiian bandleader Lani McIntire, which had become a success when it was recorded by Bing Crosby and Larry Clinton, among others. It was their recordings that Derwood Brown covered and not Rodgers', which would have been an impossibility since Brown's version was issued before Rodgers'. Rodgers had recorded it in 1930 (accompanied by McIntire and his Hawaiians), but the song was held back for release until December 1937, four-and-a-half years after Rodgers' death. Derwood Brown's version was recorded in February 1937 and issued about a month later. So, technically speaking, this cannot be considered a 'cover' version of Rodgers record.
