Maxine Brown: A Funny Kind Of Feeling 1960-1962 Sides (LP, 180g Vinyl)
Revered by Dave Godin' and the early aficionados of soul music, the great Maxine Brown was one of the most underrated R&B queens of the Sixties. During that era she released a series of singles — -All in My Mind,' 'Funny.' 'Something You Got,' and the breathtaking ballad 'Oh No. Not My Baby' — which managed to become either pop or R&B hits.
She failed to gain her rightful place in the R&B pantheon, perhaps because her good-time. New York City pop-soul lacked southern sass or tragedy in the making. Despite her lack of smashes. Brown is acknowledged as one of the finest rhythm & blues vocalists of her time. She was capable of delivering soul. jazz. and pop with equal aplomb.
Maxine Brown (born in Kingstree. South Carolina on August 18. 1939) was not only influenced by the great gospel and R&B artists of the past, she would also collaborate with some of the finest talent of the golden era of soul, including the great Otis Redding, the inimitable Chuck Jackson. and the phenomenal Ed Townsend. Her lack of exposure hindered her genuine singing talent. However. Brown's heart-wrenching ballads. great up-tempo dance numbers, and everything in between. will ensure that her legacy is kept fresh in people's minds for a long time to come.
This special LP release compiles 18 studio tracks, including a bunch of the sensational singles Maxine Brown made for the small Nomar. Wand and the major ABC-Paramount labels. between 1960 and 1962. Most of these splendid songs would form part of Maxine's debut LP. the iconic The Fabulous Sound of Maxine Brown. issued on the Wand imprint. Highlights include Brown's first single 'All in My Mind.' and the follow-up 'Funny', as well as other touching ballads like 'Think of Me,' 'Ask Me,' and the aforementioned 'Oh No. Not My Baby.' The latter was originally written for The Shirelles but was recorded with alternate lead vocals. Arranger Stan Greenberg identified that the song needed a different melodic approach, hence it was offered to Maxine with the caveat that she develop the melody.
Other highlights consist of the upbeat pop number 'Wanting You.' the roaring 'I Got a Funny Kind of Feeling.' 'My Time for Cryin'' (an excellent organ and choir-accompanied slow tune). and the superb Clyde Otis-Brook Benton country-slanted 'If You Have No Real Objections.' This set also contains a number of Maxine Brown's lesser-known songs. such as 'Since I Found You.' -Heaven in Your Arms,' and 'If I Knew Then (What I Know Now),' which also deserve attention.
All of these fabulous recordings have been remastered and packaged together in this collector's edition. which gives ample proof of Maxine Brown's versatility as well as of her rightful place in the R&B and early soul pantheon.

Oh No; Not My Baby
Born August 18, 1939 in Kingstree, South Carolina, Maxine Brown grew up in the New York borough of Queens, singing gospel before going secular with a group called The Manhattans. "The leader of the group said, 'You never donate anything to the group. Here, here's a title. Go write something!'" she says. "I was sitting there steaming. How dare he just throw this title at me? So I'm thinking about all my past experiences in the short span that I was out there, and all of a sudden this melody came to me, and the words just started coming, and in about ten minutes I was through!" Nothing more came of All In My Mind until two years later, when agent Mal Williams asked Maxine if she had any originals. "He said, 'Well, this is better than the stuff we're going in the studio with!' And we went in and recorded that.
"So one day we're standing in front of the Brill Building, and Tony Bruno walked out and said, 'Hey Mal, what have you got?' He said, 'I've got this demo and her!' So he said, 'Well, bring it up and let me hear it!' So the next day he took it up and let him hear it, and he flipped!" Out on Bruno's tiny Nomar label, All In My Mind peaked at #2 R&B in 1961. A few months later, her Funny made it to #3. "I needed a guitar player to conduct for me. And I got this young man by the name of Sammy Taylor,"she says. "He was getting ready to record for himself. And when he played that song for me, I said, 'I've got to have it! That's my next hit!'"
Nomar wasn't long for the world, and Williams—by then her hubby—put his gorgeous spouse on ABC-Paramount. "One day I ran into Florence Greenberg in a restaurant at the corner of where 1650 Broadway is," says Maxine. "She says, 'When are you gonna leave that label and come over to my label and let me do something for you?'
I said, 'If you want me, go get me!' And the very next day she did."
Gerry Goffin and Carole King wrote Oh No Not My Baby, Maxine's entrancing #24 pop seller for Greenberg's Wand logo. "Stan Green (Florence's sightless son) was the one who found 'Oh No Not My Baby' for me out of the vault," she says. "Because originally, that track was done by The Shirelles,"she says. "I took the record home.
I didn't pay too much attention. And I put it on a boom box and put it in my window and I sat on the porch. And these two girls were skipping rope, and as the record played, they kept saying, 'Oh no, not my baby.' I said, 'Uh-oh! When people start singing the hook, you've got something!' So I went back in the house, and I went to work." Dee Dee Warwick and The Sweet Inspirations provided vocal harmonies. The song was successfully covered in 1965 by Manfred Mann in the U.K., and hit again in '73 for Rod Stewart. Maxine continued to score '60s hits for Wand, both on her own and as Chuck Jackson's duet partner, and still performs in New York.
