Elaine Brown has led a life full of accolades. In August 1974, Elaine Brown was appointed the only female leader of the Black Panther Party by Huey Newton from his exile in Cuba and has pursued a career of community service to this day. But her 1969 debut album Seize the Time begs the question of what would have happened if she hadn't put her musical career first. She was first discovered as an artist when she sang Thomas Dorsey's “Precious Lord” at the funeral service for Panther Bunchy Carter. Afterward, Panther's Chief of Staff David Hilliard had her audition for himself on the piano. This session led to her composition “The Meeting” (about an encounter with Eldridge Cleaver) being adopted as the Black Panther Party's national anthem and an album being commissioned. Elaine enlisted jazz legend Horace Tapscott and his Los Angeles-based Pan-African Peoples Arkestra as arrangers and backers, and Seize the Time was born - the Black Panther Party newspaper called it “the first songs of the American Revolution”.

Blending influences from Bob Dylan to classical music and carried by Elaine's powerful, heartfelt lyrics, this album will get your blood pumping, whether you agree with the politics or not. In collaboration with Elaine Brown herself, Seize the Time is now being reissued for the first time in the U.S. as an LP, complete with the original “uni-pak” packaging with lyrics and liner notes, plus an insert with new liner notes by Pat Thomas, author of Listen Whitey! The Sounds of Black Power 1965-1975.
