VARIOUS ARTISTS AT THE LOUISIANA HAYRIDE TONIGHT... (Bear Family)
20-CD mega-box of musical gold. 9/10 This is a huge box chronicling the weekly radio show 'Louisiana Hayride', broadcast live on Saturday nights spanning three decades. There's also a lavish 225-page hardback LP-sized book, rammed with info on the shows and artists. The show proved to be a cradle of stars, not least Hank Williams. This set includes a 1948 previously unknown recording from him, but it's October 16th 1954 which is seismic in the history of rock 'n' roll. Until this point Elvis Presley had been a minor regional novelty, he'd only recorded his debut 'That's All Right' three months before. After a Ginny Wright warbles 'How to Get Married' Elvis, Scotty and Bill are unleashed to an unsuspecting wider USA and things are never the same again. A stunning collection of musical history to be treasured. Simon Nott
