Bear Family's vinyl series releases rare old records again on 10-inch and this time it is Le Rock C'est Ca by Vince Taylor, originally released in 1961 on the French label Barclay Records, neatly recreated with respect for the original artwork, with two bonus tracks to increase the playing time from 10 to 12 songs, on quality vinyl and in a limited edition of 500 copies on this time lemon yellow vinyl!
Vince Taylor was a special case: an Englishman who emigrated with his parents to America at the age of seven, returned to England around 1957 and was overtaken in France in 1961 as the real deal. The combination of Taylor's handsome appearance, a bad boy image directly stolen from Gene Vincent with black leather suit and thick necklaces, and the super-fast suppleness and tiger-like movements of Elvis made him a truly spectacular live act. Search YouTube for the rare live fragments of what must have been one of the wildest rockers ever: Taylor meanders across the stage like a electric eel. He also made the difference with his American voice, a real rock 'n' roll voice with which he could effortlessly create a convincing Eddie Cochran and Johnny Kidd, and especially with that sneer in his voice: Vince Taylor was a stripe of real rock 'n' roll, which gave him in La Douce France an almost mythical status that continues to this day because Taylor is still mentioned in the same breath as Gene Vincent, despite or perhaps because of his early and actually sad end: He died in 1991 at the age of 52 of lung cancer after an endless series of doomed attempts at comeback in alcohol and drug vapors, a literally unrecognisable shadow of the tiger he once was. Another example of his impact: what was on the B-side of the 1973 American hit version of the Golden Earring single Radar Love? A song titled Just Like Vince Taylor! Taylor has two rock 'n' roll classics pur sang to his credit, Brand New Cadillac and Jet Black Machine, but was mainly a performer who covered other people's hits, and that is reflected on this 10-inch. 20 Flight Rock is besides a fairly natural Eddie Cochran cover a more than successful cross-fertilization between rock 'n' roll, rockabilly and British rock 'n' roll with flaming guitar work that works towards the explosive guitar solos and endings - that must have been something live in those days. How well Taylor Eddie Cochran could imitate Eddie Cochran is further shown by his equally natural cover of C'Mon Everybody, and Sweet Little Sixteen by Chuck Berry sounds flashy with that pumping electric bass and that heavy drumming, which together makes a lot of noise. Johnny Kidd's iconic British song Shakin' All Over is also approached very closely in Taylor's cover version, bonus track and Ray Smith cover Right Behind You Baby flashes just as well. Lovin' Up A Storm (Jerry Lee Lewis) and So Glad You're Mine (Elvis) are a bit softer, Baby Let's Play House (Elvis) hangs in between, and the Elvis ballads Don't Leave Me Now and Love Me were undoubtedly meant to give the female fans nodding knees. To the left and right a little piano is tinkling through it on this record. The second bonus track is Brand New Cadillac but instead of that Right Behind You Baby we had gone for his own Jet Black Machine. A rights issue? Bear Family’s vinyl reeks brengt zeldzame oude platen opnieuw uit op 10-inch en dit keer is dat Le Rock C’est Ca van Vince Taylor, origineel verschenen in 1961 op het Franse label Barclay Records, netjes nagemaakt met respect voor het originele artwork, met twee bonustracks om de speelduur op te trekken van 10 naar 12 songs, op kwaliteitsvinyl en in een gelimiteerde uitgave van 500 exemplaren op dit maal citroengeel vinyl!
Vince Taylor was een speciaal geval: een Engelsman die op zijn zevende met zijn ouders naar Amerika emigreerde, rond 1957 terug naar Engeland kwam en in 1961 in Frankrijk werd ingehaald als de real deal. De combinatie van Taylor’s knappe uiterlijk, een bad boy imago rechtstreeks gejat van Gene Vincent met zwart leren pak en dikke kettingen, én de supersnelle souplesse en tijgerachtige bewegingen van Elvis maakten hem tot een waarlijk spectaculaire live-act. Zoek op YouTube de zeldzame live fragmenten op van wat een van de wildste rockers ooit moet zijn geweest: Taylor kronkelt over het podium als een sidderaal. Daarnaast maakte hij het ook het verschil met zijn Amerikaanse stem, een echte rock ‘n’ roll stem waarmee hij moeiteloos een overtuigende Eddie Cochran en Johnny Kidd kon neerzetten, en dan vooral met die sneer in zijn stem: Vince Taylor was een streep échte rock ‘n’ roll, wat hem in La Douce France een bijna mythische status opleverde die voortduurt tot de dag van heden want Taylor wordt er nog steeds in één adem genoemd met Gene Vincent, ondanks of misschien juist door zijn vroegtijdige en eigenlijk zielige einde: hij overleed in 1991 op slechts 52-jarige leeftijd aan longkanker na een eindeloze reeks tot mislukken gedoemde en in alcohol- en drugsdampen opgegane pogingen tot comeback, een letterlijk onherkenbare schaduw van de tijger die hij ooit was. Hoe goed Taylor Eddie Cochran kon imiteren blijkt voorts uit zijn even natuurgetrouwe cover van C’Mon Everybody, en Sweet Little Sixteen van Chuck Berry klinkt flitsend met die pompende elektrische bas en dat stevig drumwerk, wat samen dat een hoop lawaai maakt. Ook het iconische Britse nummer Shakin’ All Over van Johnny Kidd wordt erg dicht benaderd in Taylor’s coverversie, bonustrack en Ray Smith cover Right Behind You Baby flitst evenzeer. Lovin’ Up A Storm (Jerry Lee Lewis) en So Glad You’re Mine (Elvis) zijn wat softer, Baby Let’s Play House (Elvis) hangt daar tussenin, en de Elvis ballades Don’t Leave Me Now en Love Me waren ongetwijfeld bedoeld om de vrouwelijke fans knikkende knieën te bezorgen. Links en rechts tingelt er op deze plaat een beetje piano doorheen. De tweede bonustrack is Brand New Cadillac maar wij hadden in plaats van die Right Behind You Baby toch gegaan voor zijn eigen Jet Black Machine. Een rechtenkwestie?
