Pop-Primadonna wird sie genannt, oder Stimmvulkan, oder Tigerin. Es trifft auf sie zu, wenn auch nicht immer nur Superlative für sie zu gebrauchen sind. Sicher, sie hat ihre Fans, die bei allem, was sie macht, beglückt begeistert lauschen und sehen, aber andererseits bietet sie in ihren Shows nicht eben viel Neues: Man weiß ungefähr, was als nächstes kommt. Aber sie hat gelernt, sich zu verkaufen, ihre Show so an das Publikum zu bringen, dass dieses von ihr total eingefangen wird. Gelernt in den verräucherten walisischen Kneipen, in denen sie als 16jährige vor Bergarbeitern sang, gelernt auf den kleinen Wanderbühnen und in den Vorstadttheatern Londons, den Klubs, die der Anfang, aber auch das Ende einer musikalischen Entwicklung sein können. Shirley war hartnäckig, nahm Gesangs- und Schauspielunterricht - man merkt ihr heute auf der Bühne den Hang zu dramatischer Schauspielerei an. Dann erhielt sie die einmalige Chance, den Song, der sie weltbekannt machte: Die Titelmelodie des Filmes „Goldfinger'. Das war 1964. Seitdem ist sie systematisch zur „Pop-Primadonna' aufgebaut worden, und sie trägt diese „Bürde' mit Würde, nämlich mit der Würde einer Frau, die weiß, was sie kann, und die weiß, dass sie ihrem Millionenpublikum auf der ganzen Welt dieses Können zur Unterhaltung darbietet.
