Jeff Barry entered the music business in 1959 as a singer, recording about a dozen singles before 1962, at which time he met and married a young songwriter named Ellie Green-wich. He'd also written a few hits for Others, notably 'Tell Laura I Love Her' (Ray Peterson, RCA) and 'Chip, Chip' (Gene McDaniels, Liberty), and with Greenwich he de-veloped one of the hottest writing teams in New York, turn-ing out hits for Lesley Gore, Ray Peterson, the Exciters, the Shirelles, the Chiffons and others. In early 1963, he and Ellie began recording for Jubilee as the Raindrops, scoring two big hits with 'What A Guy' and `Kind Of Boy You Can't Forget'.
At the same time, they were involved heavily with Phil Spector, knocking out hits including 'Da Doo Ron Ron', 'Then He Kissed Me' (Crys-tals), 'Be My Baby', 'Baby I Love You', 'Chapel Of Love' (Ronettes), 'Wait Till My Bobby Gets Home' (Darlene Love), 'Not Too Young To Get Married' (Bob B. Soxx), and 'River Deep, Mountain High' (Ike and Tina Turner), as well as lesser hits for all these artists. In 1964, they were also working for Leiber and Stoller's newly formed Red Bird label, where they wrote, arranged and/or produced most of the label's output by the Jelly Beans, Dixie Cups and the Shangri-Las. It was there they discovered Neil Diamond, and took him to Bang Records in 1966, where they produced five albums and twelve singles with him, also writing most of his hits. Barry's marriage to Greenwich ended in late 1965, and though they continued writing together, they were headed in different directions.
She got involved in production, while he cut singles for UA and Red Bird, and produced Andy Kim on Steed (`How'd We Ever Get This Way' and other Top Fifty hits). At the same time, he and Kim were writing, producing and playing on 'Sugar, Sugar' and other hits by the Archies, which kept them busy through 1970. Since then, Barry has worked primarily as a producer for A&M, and has also issued a single (1973) on that label.
