Waldir Azevedo was one of the great masters of the Brazilian cavaquinho and a defining figure in the tradition of choro. “Warner 25 Anos” brings together 14 instrumental performances, offering a concise introduction to the elegance, rhythmic precision and melodic character of his music. The collection opens with “Brasileirinho”, one of Azevedo’s best-known compositions, and continues with “Carioquinha”, “Você, Carinho e Amor”, “Contraste”, “Vê Se Gostas”, “Queira-me Bem” and “Mágoas de um Cavaquinho”. The program also includes “Pedacinhos do Céu”, “Delicado”, “Choro Novo em Dó”, “Frevo da Lira”, “Arrasta-Pé”, “Sentido” and “Camundongo”. Released in Brazil in 2001 as part of Warner’s 25th-anniversary series, the CD focuses entirely on Azevedo’s instrumental repertoire. His cavaquinho playing combines remarkable technical control with a light, flowing rhythmic feel, making these performances an excellent introduction to classic Brazilian choro. A highly appealing release for collectors and listeners interested in Brazilian instrumental music and the history of the cavaquinho.
