In the middle of the punks vs Teds battles, Whirlwind became the go-to support act for the Clash, Blondie, Ian Dury and many others. With charismatic frontman Nigel Dixon’s pop star good looks and vocally channelling Billy Fury, this debut LP grabbed the sound of Whirlwind in the raw.

The look was encapsulated in the spectacular cover design by Barney Bubbles, which brought the 50s into the 70s. The sight of punks doing the Rock-A-Billy heel and toe skip dance in bondage trousers never ceased to amuse.

This all predated the amalgamation of the two into psychobilly and “Blowing Up A Storm” is now regarded as a quintessential album for every discerning punk hepcat…

1978, als der Punkrock überall wütete, waren Whirlwind die erste Wahl als Vorgruppe unter den Punkrockern und New Wavers. Angeführt von dem charismatischen Nigel Dixon, öffneten sie sich für alle, vom Clash über Blondie bis hin zu den Blockheads. Ihr stripped-down boppin' rockabilly war belioebt bei Punks und Teds zugleich, trotz des angeblichen Aggro zwischen ihnen. Das erste Album erschien ursprünglich als 10 "Vinyl. Das Album besteht hauptsächlich aus Coverversionen von heißen Platten aus der damals aufkeimenden Rockabilly-Szene mit einem Hauch von Originalen von Nigel und Gitarrist Mick Lewis.

Gegründet von Sänger Nigel Dixon (der später in Havanna 3AM mit Ex-Clash-Bassist Paul Simonon spielen sollte) und Schlagzeuger Phil Hardy, zusammen mit Leadgitarrist Mick Lewis und Bassist Chris Emo, wurden sie schnell zu einer gefragten Rockabilly-Band im Rock'n'Roll-Club und wurden überraschend sogar von der aufkeimenden Punk-Szene unterstützt. Eine Speakeasy-Residenz folgte und ein Plattenvertrag für das junge Chiswick-Label, der zu Whirlwinds Debütalbum "Blowin' Up A Storm" (komplett mit Stuart Colman Sleevenotes und einer von Barney Bubbles gestalteten Hülle) führte, das im Januar 1978 veröffentlicht wurde.

Als die Band ihr zweites Album'Midnight Blue' veröffentlichte, waren sie groß genug, um Blondie die Support-Tour zu sichern. Leider wurde Hassett während dieser Tour krank und anstatt die Besetzung zu ändern, beschlossen sie, es einen Tag zu nennen. 1993 erlag Nigel Dixon dem Krebs und später im selben Jahr auch Phil Hardy.
