Sich neu zu erfinden war ein wesentlicher Aspekt der erstaunlichen Karriere von Johnny 'Guitar' Watson. Der in Houston geborene Multiinstrumentalist begann seine produktive Plattenkarriere im Teenageralter als Pianist in L.A., bevor er 1954 zur Gitarre wechselte, die er umwerfend spielte. Seine nur mit den Fingern erzeugte Stakkato-Saitenattacke, die er in diesen aufregenden frühen Jahren verwendete (zwei herausragende Beispiele aus den Mittfünfzigerjahren befinden sich auf Teil 2 unserer Sammlung, Three Hours Past Midnight und Space Guitar), entwickelte er über die Jahrzehnte zu einer verfeinerten, prägnanten, sanfteren Technik weiter. Als Johnny 1976 sein 'Ain't That A Bitch'-Album auf Dick James' DJM-Label veröffentlichte, war er ein gelassener Funkster, dessen Blueswurzeln dicht unter der Oberfläche lagen – besonders im humorvoll-ironischen Titelsong der LP.

 

Watsons Diskografie zeigt in den 60er-Jahren einige faszinierende Abzweigungen. Mehrere seiner Aufnahmen für King Records, darunter der mit Streichern angereicherte 1962er-Hit Cuttin' In, das rockende Broke And Lonely und eine packende Version des uralten Blues In The Evenin', zeigten mehr als nur eine leichte Affinität zum Gesangsstil von Ray Charles. Für eine 1964er-Chess-LP saß er wieder am Klavier und sang schicke Pop-Standards mit einer Jazz-Rhythmusgruppe. "Ich wollte wirklich mal was anderes machen", sagte Watson. "Ich hatte den Jazz immer irgendwie in meinem Blut."

Mit dem 'Bad Boy' des Rock 'n' Roll, Larry Williams, tourte Watson 1965 durch England und nahm eine heiße LP für die britische Decca auf. "Larry und ich waren einfach gute Freunde", sagte Johnny. "Wir wohnten in derselben Gegend. Er war ein Fan von mir, ich war Fan von ihm. Wir beschlossen uns zusammenzutun. Wir gingen zusammen nach Europa und absolvierten ein paar gemeinsame Auftritte. Wir waren einfach gute Freunde, wir hingen rum und verbrachten viel Zeit miteinander." Zurück zu Hause, kam ihre soulige Duett-Gesangsversion von Cannonball Adderleys Mercy, Mercy, Mercy 1967 auf OKeh auf die unteren Ränge der Charts. "Das war meine Idee. Wir hatten nicht sonderlich viel Erfolg damit", sagte Watson. "Ich fühlte mich ein bisschen komisch dabei, denn wir hatten Probleme mit Cannonball, mit dem Verlag und so. Es war ein Instrumentalstück, und sie wollten unseren Text dazu nicht genehmigen."  

Unverdrossen nahm Johnny 1967 eine Fats-Waller-Tribute-LP auf. "Einer der Vizepräsidenten von OKeh hörte mich eines Tages zufällig im Studio, als ich auf dem Klavier rumklimperte und ein paar Songs anspielte", sagte Johnny. "Er sagte: 'Hey, du könntest der neue Fats Waller sein. Warum erkundigst du dich nicht über Fats und kaufst all seine Songs? Lass uns eine LP machen!'"

Wie ein Chamäleon verwandelte sich Watson bei DJM erneut. Das Coverfoto von 'Ain't That A Bitch' zeigt ihn in Zuhälterklamotten, ein Afghanischer Windhund sitzt neben ihm auf dem Sofa, zwei Frauen liegen ihm zu Füßen. Sein neuester Sound war topaktueller Funk-Soul auf einem Blues-Fundament. Nachdem er über zwei Jahrzehnte krampfhaft nach der richtigen kommerziellen Formel gesucht hatte, war Johnny 'Guitar' endlich darauf gestoßen. "Ich hatte nur nie die richtige Firma gefunden, die mich unterstützen würde, so wie Dick James", sagte er. "Er war in London. Er und Elton John hatten irgendein Missverständnis, und Dick wollte ein Label gründen. Ein Typ namens Mike Vernon stellte mich Dick James vor."

Der Titelsong war die bluesigste Nummer auf der LP, die Goldstatus erlangte. Genauso wie seine nächstes Album, 'A Real Mother For Ya', dessen Titelsong 1977 auch eine erfolgreiche Hitsingle war. Johnny veröffentlichte bis in die 1980er-Jahre zukunftsweisendes, erfolgreiches Material. Sein Tod am 17. Mai 1996 durch einen Herzanfall während eines Konzerts in Yokohama, Japan, kam völlig überraschend und schockierte seine vielen Fans.
