The mighty McKinley Morganfield from Mississippi, nicknamed “Muddy Water” as a child because he played in Deer Creek, is considered the founder of modern Chicago blues. He was signed to the local Aristocrat label in 1947, and his popularity enabled the formation of Chess Records in 1950, which he has consistently helped place in the top echelon of indie labels. The four alternative recordings here showcase his artistry and originality.
