"Voxpoppers"

The Voxpoppers kamen aus Brooklyn und bestanden aus den Brüdern Freddie, Sal und Harry Tambura. Die in sich geschlossene Einheit zählte insgesamt fünf oder sechs Mitglieder, und einer von ihnen spielte Akkordeon, wenn das Promo-Foto auf dem Cover ihrer seltenen Mercury-EP korrekt war. Wishing For Your Love, ihre Doowop-getränkte Debüt-Ballade, erschien ursprünglich im Februar 1958 auf Bill Lasleys Label Amp 3, bevor Mercury sie landesweit aufnahm. Der Titel segelte in jenem Frühjahr bis auf Platz 18 der "Billboard"-Pop-"Jockey"-Liste, mit einem stolzierenden "The Last Drag", das auf der Rückseite eine heiße Gitarre aufweist.

Bevor Mercury eine Zugabe vorbereiten konnte, veröffentlichte das Poplar-Label The Voxpoppers' A Love To Last A Lifetime aus der Feder von Danny Small (Freddie Tambura schrieb die Rückseite, Come Back Little Girl). Mercury antwortete später im Frühjahr mit einer Kopplung von Ping Pong Baby und Pony Tail, zwei Rockern, die vom New Yorker Songschreiber Jack Hammer geliefert wurden. Singles für Versailles (Can't Understand It von 1959) und Warwick (Lonely For You als Freddie and The Voxpoppers in '60) rundeten den schmalen Katalog der Band ab.
