Billy Vera & Judy Clay war weniger bemerkenswert für ihre Musik als für ihre historische Bedeutung: Sicherlich das erste interracial Aufnahme-Duo in der Soulmusik, dieses spät-'60s Team kann das erste interracial Aufnahmeduo irgendwelcher Art gewesen sein.

Vera war ein New Yorker Songwriter mit einigen kleinen Erfolgen (Ricky Nelsons "Mean Old World", Barbara Lewis "Make Me Belong to You"), als er seine Komposition "Storybook Children" zum Atlantic Executive Jerry Wexler brachte. Vera versuchte zunächst, es mit Nona Hendryx (damals mit Patti LaBelle & the Bluebelles) aufzunehmen, aber als diese Idee nicht wegging, trat er mit Clay zusammen.

Judy Lee, Clay hatte sich in die Gospel-Gruppe der Drinkard Singers (die auch Cissy Houston) in den späten 50er Jahren, und hatte Soul Singles während der 60er Jahre ohne bemerkenswerte Erfolg aufgenommen.
