Neither his late and absurd induction into the Hall of Fame, nor the release of compilations like this one will ever do full justice to one of the key figures in the birth and development of R&B. That's why any album that considers the historical dimension and artistic talent of Ike Turner deserves plenty of attention.

“Down And Out” - only available on vinyl - collects the best material of Ike Turner both as a solo artist and as bandleader of the Kings Of Rhythm in the fifties. This celebration of raw R&B features “I'm Lonesome Baby”, his legendary first single, the killer instrumental “Cuban Getaway” and “Cubano Jump”, as well as “Box Top”, the recording debut of a very young Tina Turner. Excellent artwork, remastered sound, liner notes and discography by specialist Fred Rothwell, who is currently working on a biography of Ike Turner. “Down And Out” has not been available on vinyl for the last 20 years!
