Ton Steine Scherben: Live At Rockpalast 1982 (2-CD + DVD)
The bonus feature “Tempo 82” and the accompanying concert recordings are in perfect quality and complement the overall package excellently.
“Wenn die Nacht am tiefsten ist, ist der Tag am nächsten” (When the night is deepest, the day is closest), the title song of Ton Steine Scherben's third LP from 1975, represents a turning point in the German rock band's career, both musically and lyrically.
Founded in Berlin in 1970, they were among the first to make rock music with German lyrics without sounding embarrassing or contrived. But the Scherben are more than just a band: they tried to live what they sang. Shortly after forming, they recorded their first single in a gloomy ballroom in Neukölln: “Macht kaputt, was euch kaputt macht” (Destroy what destroys you) and “Wir streiken” (We're on strike) were raw, radical, and authentic.
Their first festival appearance on the island of Fehmarn sparked a fiasco. Within a very short time, Die Scherben were considered THE left-wing political rock band and rose to become icons of the left-wing scene.
In order to be independent of the industry, they founded their own label, David Volksmund Produktion, in 1971. After their concerts, houses were squatted and their records were in every shared apartment.
Four years later, after the band left West Berlin and founded a rural commune on a dilapidated farm in North Frisia, Die Scherben turned away from political/agit rock and, with the release of the double LP “Wenn die Nacht am tiefsten ...” they turned to more melancholic lyrics and more sophisticated musical arrangements, incorporating elements of jazz, funk, folk, and ethno rock.
It wasn't until 1981 that a new album, IV (popularly known as “Schwarze”), was released. Die Scherben returned to the stage.
The tour for “Schwarze” was a big show, an artistic success—and unfortunately also the beginning of the end for the band. They were unable to pay off the debts they incurred during this tour.
Even their new manager Claudia Roth was unable to prevent their demise. So we can be glad that WDR Rockpalast recorded the concert in Hamburg's Markthalle on February 13, 1982.

Ton Steine Scherben
"Dreams are over when there's no one to dream them." (Rio Reiser)
"No other political rock group, probably no singer-songwriter, has had such a lasting effect and inspired so many musicians and lyricists to deal with their everyday lives and their political implications in their native language. This is how Holger Böning describes the meaning of Rio Reiser (1950-1996) and the group Ton Steine Scherben in his book 'Der Traum von einer Sache'. Founded in Berlin in the summer of 1970, at a time when the Federal Republic was undergoing radical change, Ton Steine Scherben became the musical mouthpiece of a young generation rebelling against parents, teachers and bosses. Especially songs like "No power for nobody" and "Power broken what breaks you" became hymns of the left. Rio Reiser and his fellow musicians called for disobedience, rebellion and upheaval. But they also articulated - as in the song Mein Name ist Mensch - the dreams of a better world that were formulated in the student movement and in the youth protest of those years.
I know we'll fight,
I know we will win,
I know we're gonna live,
and we're gonna love each other.
Planet Earth
will belong to all of us,
and everyone will have what they need.
In the foreword to his Rio Traveler biography, published in 2006, Hollow Skai writes: "The resonance he received after his death, especially from younger fans who met him not as the singer of Ton Steine Scherben but as the 'King of Germany', justifiably leads one to hope that the fight for a better life was not entirely in vain and that the dream of a more just society has not yet come to an end.
In August 2006 the David Volksmund Produktion released the complete works of Ton Steine Scherben on 13 CDs. Since 1997 there has been a competition with the 'Rio Reiser Song Prize', which encourages "young talents to carry on cosmopolitan and humanistic thoughts through their own songs".
