(2017/Parachute Recording Company) 8 Tracks - Deluxe gatefold cover - The concert featured here comes from a CBC FM Radio Broadcast performed by the Destroyers in July 1978, at the famous El Mocambo in Toronto, Canada. Featuring cuts from his first two albums plus more, this recording finds a red hot blues band at an early point in a career that has seen them release more than 20 albums, of which two have been certified Platinum and six certified Gold. The group continue to perform extensively today and in 2014 celebrated their 40th Anniversary as a touring band!

George Thorogood & The Destroyers

Beeindruckt von einem Konzert von John Hammond, kam George Thorogood (*31. 12. 1952, Wilmington) zur Musik und gründete 1973 mit Bill Blough (b), Jeff Simon (dr) und Ron Smith (g) The Destroyers, die erdigen, eckigen und herzhaft-authentischen Bluesrock spielten.

Thorogoods Vorbilder waren Elmore James, John Lee Hooker und Chuck Berry, von denen er viele Titel in sein Repertoire aufnahm. -Der Satan of Slide- (Musik Express) war fasziniert von der Direktheit des Urban-Blues und dem Tempo des Rhythm & Blues, und bald genoß er als Gitarrist den gleichen Ruf wie Johnny Winter und Rory Gallagher.

Der Kritiker John Stretton schrieb: Wer seine Slide-Gitarre genau so hören möchte, wie sie der Erfinder einzusetzen gedachte, der liegt bei Thorogood richtig.

Volle Dröhnung aus Rhythm und noch mehr Blues

1979 verkauften die Destroyers von ihrer zweiten LP MovE IT ON OVER (US #43) über 500000 Exemplare und konnten sich mit 'Who Do You Love' (US #94) in den Charts plazieren. Thorogood & Co. lehnten es jahrelang ab, in größeren Hallen zu spielen. Sie benötigten den intimen Rahmen, um die -volle Dröhnung aus Rhythm und noch mehr Blues- (Zeit) anbringen zu können.

Die LP MOVE IT ON OVER wurde ohne Ron Smith eingespielt, der die Band verlassen hatte und später im Umfeld von Maze und Tiggy Clay auftauchte. Als vierter Mann war statt dessen der Per-kussionist Uncle Meat Pennington dabei, der seinerseits 1980 dem Saxophonisten Hank 'Hurricane' Carter Platz machte. 1979 erschien die LP EVEN BETTER THAN THE REST (US #65) mit alten Aufnahmen.

An denen neben Thorogood und Simon der Bassist Michael Levine, Ex-Uttimate Spinach, beteiligt war.

Bad To The Bone

Das neue Jahrzehnt begann für die -kompakte Band- (Crash), wie das alte geendet hatte: Die Destroyers verkauften von MORE GEORGE THOROGOOD (US #72) und BAD To THE BONE (US #43) respektable Auflagen und waren ununterbrochen unterwegs.

1981 traten sie erfolgreich im Vorprogramm der Rolling Stones auf. Einem Remake von 'Willie And The Hand Jive' (US #63) von Johnny Otis verdankte Thorogood im Sommer 1985 endlich wieder einen Top-75-Hit, der aus dem Album MAVERICK (US #32) ausgekoppelt wurde.

Auf dieser LP verstärkte der Gitarrist Steve Crismar die Destroyers. Zugeständnisse an Popaktualitäten waren bei Thorogood und seinem zeitlo-sen Rock'n'Roll die Ausnahme. Saxophon, Bläsersätze und Bottleneck-Gitarre markierten die Akzente (Musik Express). Sowohl auf dem Mitschnitt LIVE (US #33) vom Sommer 1986.

Als auch bei der in Memphis aufgenommenen 87er-Produktion BORN To BE BAD (US #32).

Unprätentiöse Bluesrock

-Der unprätentiöse Bluesrock- (Hifi Vision) verfehlte bei Auftritten auch weiterhin nicht seine Wirkung. Die Plattenumsätze gingen allerdings in den 90er Jahren stark zurück.

1991 / 92 beendeten BOOGIE PEOPLE (US #77) und der Sampler THE BADDEST OF THE BAD (US #100) Thorogoods Chartskarriere. Er blieb jedoch eine konstante Größe in der Rockszene, der sein Publikum selten enttäuschte.
