“I'm Only a Man” was Willie's album debut, recorded for Capitol in 1970, and he brought the same profound intensity to the record as he did to his singles. The difference being that Willie's warm, raspy voice on “I'm Only a Man” was lovingly immersed in spectacular arrangements by H. B. Barnum and produced by the great David Axelrod. Strings, brass, xylophone, bluesy guitar licks and a funky rhythm section can be heard in the grooves of this record, with a bold selection of material ranging from Cannonball Adderley's “Walk Tall” to the Bacharach-David nugget “Reach Out for Me” to the self-penned highlights “Mirror” and “Bring On the Heartaches” and the album closer “People” by Funny Girl.
