Begonnen hat es mit einem Quartett mit dem Namen „Hoboken Four', das es nicht viel weiter brachte als zu einer Radioshow: „Major Bowes Amateur Hour'. Die Vier gaben auf, doch Frank Sinatra schaffte es allein mit einer Solofassung von „Night and Day“. Bemerkenswerte Auftritte um New York folgten. Harry James und Tommy Dorsey holten ihn als Bandsänger. Vor dem zweiten Weltkrieg wurde er Hauptsänger in der Radiosendung „Your Hit Parade', bekam dann seine eigene DBS-Radioshow „Songs By Sinatra'. 1943 machte er sein Filmdebüt in „Reveil|e With Beverley'.

3 Jahre später erhielt Frank Sinatra einen Oscar für seine Darstellung in „The House I Live ln'. 1953 gewann er einen weiteren Oscar für seine Rolle als Maggio in „Verdammt in alle Ewigkeit'. Zwischen 1943 und 1953 ging seine Karriere steil nach oben, um plötzlich steil abzufallen, in eine Tiefe, aus der ihm nur wenige eine Rückkehr zutrauten.

ln den 50er und 60er Jahren erreichte seine Filmkarriere neue Anerkennung. Als Frank Sinatra Weihnachten 1965 eine Ein-Mann-Fernsehshow unter dem Titel: „Frank Sinatra: A Man And His Music', in der er einen musikalischen Rückblick auf die 25 Jahre seiner Karriere gab, hatte er Erfolg und erhielt dafür den Peabody Award.

Pause von 1971 bis 1973. Dann Rückkehr und als Ergebnis ein Album schöner, sorgfältig ausgesuchter Songs. Tourneen schlossen sich an. „The Voice' oder auch „The People's Choice', wie Gordon Jenkins ihn nannte, ist wieder da. Solange Frank da ist, sind Millionen von Sinatra-Verehrern glücklich.
