Hank Shizzoe: Songsmith

(2014/Blue Rose) 12 tracks.
Holds Shizzoe 13th album, what the title promises: Twelve finely crafted songs - arranged and produced by Stephan Eicher - where Shizzoe climbs as a singer, musician and author new heights. In for a surprise.

After the joint work on Eicher's album "Envolée" and the following tour (90 concerts in France, Belgium and Switzerland 2012/2013) to Shizzoe and Eicher end of 2013 moved back to the studio. Also on board was the Berne drummer and DJ Simon Baumann. As guests enter the gifted multi-instrumentalist Reyn Ouwehand Dutch and the Irish singer Shirley Grimes in appearance.

The songs cover a variety of topics. From the hysteria surrounding financial crises ("Like It's 1929"), the hype surrounding new electronics ("iTune"), the failure of the Almighty ("He Is Not"), about the half-life of relationships ("Planned Obsolescence") up to a Boogie-Ode to a small mountain country ("Where I Come From") shines "Songsmith" with skillful, mature and refined craft that has been found in the production of Stephan Eicher his musical home. Whether reveling Orchestra, a gnarled synthpop, grandiose ballads, guitar playing in a class or pop of the 1930s (Charles Trenet's "Je Chante" in English translation and lunatic Arrangement): The album is varied without effort, full of surprises. Producer Eicher Shizzoe challenged as a singer and the voice placed in the center. On "Songsmith" means any sound where it belongs.

Hank Shizzoe

”Those who care about these things have been knowing for a long time that Hank Shizzoe is the best roots-rock songwriter and guitar player who’s not hailing from the US. And that he would still be one of the best even if he did come from the Promised Land.” – Rolling Stone Magazin

Hank Shizzoe, born 1966, lives and works in Bern, Switzerland. He got his first guitar when he was sixteen, and to this day the instrument has never let go of him.

Later he was writing songs. He still does that today. And he began to sing, a passion that still remains with him today.

Sometime in the nineteen nineties - meanwhile matured into a veritable (slide) guitar virtuoso - he began recording his music. Hank has released 16 albums since 1994.

The next step for Hank, the multi-instrumentalist - he also plays bass, drums, marimba and triangle on his productions - was for him the walk on stage. Since then he has played more than 1,500 concerts, partly solo, partly with his own band or with others, he performed in Trondheim, Tangier, Budapest and Los Angeles as well as many places in between. He has performed with Bob Dylan, Ali Farka Touré, ZZ Top, David Lindley and Bo Diddley, was a member of Stephan Eicher's group and recorded a live album with Sonny Landreth. He played in New York City's famous Carnegie Hall, was awarded the Prix de la Scène of the renowned Paléo Festival Nyon, and has been involved in numerous productions of other musicians, both as a guest player and producer, in genres as diverse as rock, folk and pop, wrote theater and film music, and Hank is a regular guest on radio broadcasts. He loves mountains, forests, motorcycles, California and appreciates good food. www.hankshizzoe.comDetlev Hoegen, Februayr 2019
