"This is as close as some of you will ever get to Jesus!" - Announcements like these make it clear why soul musician Jackie Shane, born on May 15, 1940 in Nashville, Tennessee, was one of the most charismatic singers in the 1960s, even then addressing her transsexuality on stage.

With her uncompromising voice and ecstatic interjections reminiscent of a gospel priest, she always had the audience in her regular location, the historic Sapphire Tavern in Toronto, firmly in her hand. Over the course of the decade, Shane released several successful singles as well as a live album. Her biggest chart hit from 1962, "Any Other Way," a cover of a soul standard by William Bell, had to be re-released just five years later due to high demand.

But despite her considerable success, she disappeared from the public eye without a trace in 1971. Almost 50 years after her retirement from the music business, the Numero Group label released the first compilation authorized by the artist.
