Black Jazz was only active from 1971 to 1975 and is considered the first jazz label founded by an African American since Sunshine Records in 1921.
It sought to expand the mind and heart by releasing spiritual, socially conscious music that explored such burgeoning genres as funk, soul jazz and free jazz.

New Direction is an often-booted album with original copies reaching princely sums, and a fairly straightforward piano trio that sets the tone for the entire label with its modal and soul jazz blossom, featuring double bass player Henry "The Skipper" Franklin and drummer Steve Clover.

The re-release of Real Gone features the distinctive original album artwork of Black Jazz along with new liner notes from Pat Thomas, the author of Listen Whitey!
