Der US-Superstar kann stolze Bilanz zie-hen: über 25 Mill. verkaufter Platten, mehr als 20 Langspielplatten, 16 Goldene Schallplatten für eigene und von ihm pro-duzierte Aufnahmen. Johnny Rivers be-gann seine Karriere Ende der 50er Jahre im Whiskey a Go Go in Los Angeles. Er entdeckte Jimmy Webb und verhalf Glen Campbell zu seinem ersten Nummer-1-Titel in der amerikanischen Hitparade: „By The Time I Get To Phoenix". Er mischte entscheidend mit beim Aufbau der Schall-plattenfirma Dunhill, die später solche Stars wie The Mamas Er Papas oder Scott McKenzie herausbrachte. Gemeinsam mit Paul Simon, Lou Adler und John Phillips gründete er das Monterey Pop Festival. Er brachte die Musiker Hal Blaine, Joe Osborne und Larry Knechte! zusammen, die später mit ihrem West-Coast-Sound Hitplatten machten.

Seine sichere Nase bewies er, als er The Versatiles entdeckte, ihnen den Namen „Fifth Dimension" verpaßte, und mit der Gruppe deren Hits produzierte. 1967 kassierte er als „Produ-zent des Jahres" und für die „Platte des Jahres" 2 Grammies. Seine eigene Karriere als Sänger irrte lange Zeit zwischen den verschiedenen Stilrichtungen um-her. Nach einer Phase des Blues und des Folksongs hat Johnny Rivers heute wie-der zum Rock zurückgefunden. Zur Auf-nahme seiner neuesten Single „Help Me Rhonda" gelang es ihm, Beach-Boys-Maestro Brian Wilson zum ersten Mal seit Jahren wieder in ein Tonstudio zu lotsen.
