Peter, Paul and Mary's self-titled debut album from 1962 was a milestone in the American folk revival. The trio, consisting of Peter Yarrow, Noel “Paul” Stookey, and Mary Travers, immediately became known for their flawless three-part harmonies. The music combines traditional folk songs with new compositions and socially conscious lyrics. This album immediately produced hits such as “Lemon Tree” and the Pete Seeger cover “If I Had a Hammer,” cementing the group's status as the leading voice of a generation.

Ob der Grausame Krieg auf den Revolutionskrieg oder den Bürgerkrieg zurückgeht, bleibt umstritten. Dass es während des Vietnamkriegs weit verbreitet war, ist es nicht. Es wurde zum ersten Mal auf Peter, Paul & Mary's erstes, gleichnamiges Album aufmerksam, das 185 Wochen in den Charts verbrachte, darunter fünf auf Platz 1. Auf dem Weg dorthin verkaufte die LP mehr als zwei Millionen Einheiten und war in vielen Studentenwohnheimen zu finden.

Peter Yarrow wurde am 31. Mai 1938 in Brooklyn, New York, geboren. Paul Stookey wurde am 30. Dezember 1937 in Baltimore, Maryland, geboren. Mary Travers aus Louisville, Kentucky, wurde am 7. November 1937 geboren und starb am 16. September 2009. Sie begannen ihre Karriere 1961 im New Yorker The Bitter End, dem Veranstaltungsort der Bleecker Street, der auch dazu beitrug, die Karriere von Künstlern wie Neil Diamond und Billy Joel zu starten.

Peter, Paul & Mary begannen ihren Aufstieg als Folk-Gruppe der 60er Jahre, als die phänomenale Reihe von Hit-Alben des Kingston Trios schwand. Dass sie die endgültigen Versionen von zwei der frühen Songs von Bob Dylan aufgenommen haben, Blowin' In The Wind und Don't Think Twice, It's All Right, hat sehr geholfen. PP&M waren bereits zu Beginn ihrer Karriere politische Aktivisten, nicht nur in ihrer Musik, sondern auch in ihrem Leben. Sie sangen If I Had A Hammer auf den Stufen des Lincoln Memorials, als Dr. Martin Luther King seine "I Have A Dream"-Rede hielt und Ende der 60er Jahre bei Anti-Vietnam-Kriegsveranstaltungen im ganzen Land auftrat. Was The Cruel War betrifft, so hat PP&M es zweimal als Single veröffentlicht. Es erschien zunächst als die B-Seite von Stewball und 1966 als die A-Seite auf Warner 5809. Der Song wurde unter anderem auch von Cher, The Cowsills und Nancy Sinatra aufgenommen, und Dolly Parton belebte ihn erst 2005 auf ihrem Album'Those Were The Days'. Eine letzte Anmerkung zu dem Lied ist, dass die USO während des Vietnamkriegs Noten verteilte, die den letzten Vers wie folgt neu schrieben: "Im ganzen Land / um die Welt heute Abend / Mein Johnny ist irgendwo / Bereitet sich auf den Kampf vor."
