Peter and Gordon — Peter Asher and Gordon Waller (vocals/guitar) — always had a lot going for them. Peter (born June 22, 1944) looked like every mother's hoped-for son, quiet and well-educated. Gordon (June 4, 1945) had the sex appeal. Peter also had an actress sister, Jane, who was Paul McCartney's girlfriend. McCartney and Lennon con-tributed unrecorded songs to give them their early hits (World Without Love', 'Nobody I Know' on EMI's Colum-bia label) and Paul also wrote 'Woman' for them under a pseudonym, but the secret leaked out. Their other hits were timely revivals and vaudevillian songs such as 'Lady Godiva'. Like Chad and Jeremy, their real success was in America, on Capitol, where their commerciality and 'Englishness' had great appeal, and where they toured frequently. They split up in 1968; Gordon went solo, unsuccessfully, and Peter Asher became a staff producer for Apple before going on to even greater success as the manager and producer of James Tay-lor as well as managing Linda Ronstadt.
