The Pearls: Zippity Zippity Zoom - Here Comes The Pearls (LP)
(Onyx) 20 tracks
The Peals were a popular group in Detroit at the same time as The Royals (later The Midnighters), debuting as The Five Pearls on Aladdin in 1954 with Please let me know, two years after The Royals Two years after The Royals debuted on Federal with Every beat of my heart. That first single was a minor hit. Eventually they moved to Onix and recorded the classic The shadows of love (co-written by Howard Guyton, Dave Clowney and Don Angelo). It was licensed to Atco and released in '55, just as Aladdin's singles were going downhill. Between '56 and '57, Onix released Let's you and I go steady, Ice cream baby and a doo wop version of Your cheating heart, which did not become hits. They did not become hits. As Howie and The Sapphires they released a number of songs, including Band of angels (B-sides: Ugly face and Square), It must be love (B-sides: I cried and Amber), More than the day before (OKeh, 1959) were also released. Howard Guyton continued to record and released four singles on Atlantic in 1960-61 as The Top Notes (members were Derek Martin and two female vocalists) The Top Notes' last single for Atlantic was the original version of Twist and Shout. The Top Notes then moved to festival ABC, but to no avail. Dave Clowney replaced The Valentines (with Old Town and Rama) after the death of their member Raymond Briggs. He joined the group as an arranger and touring musician. He also worked as accompanist for Little Anthony and The Imperials under the name Dave 'Baby' Cortes. He had a number one hit with Happy Organ (Clock Records) in 1959, popularizing the organ as an instrument in R&B and pop music. Under the name Rinky Dink, he followed up with Whishing Organ on Chess, which reached #10 on the pop charts and #9 on the R&B charts.
