Die heutige Besetzung der Oak Ridge Boys, eines der erfolgreichsten Gesangsquartetts der modernen Country Music, ist nur die jüngste Generation einer langen Reihe von Besetzungen. Die ersten Oak Ridge Boys, 1957 gegründet in Oak Ridge - Tennessee von dem ehemaligen Oak-Ridge-Quartet-Mitglied Smitty Gatlin, sangen zunächst nur Gospel Music, hatten großen Erfolg und wurden 1961 Vollprofis. Das Quartett erhielt einen Award nach dem anderen und als ihr Gospel-Erfolg nicht mehr zu steigern war, da schwenkten sie auf profane Musik um und verarbeiteten neben Country Music auch Elemente aus Rock und Soul. Seit Ende der 70er Jahre gehören sie neben den Statler Brothers zum erfolgreichsten Gesangsquartett der Country Music. William Lee Golden hatte 1986 mit einer Solo-L.P. einen Alleingang versucht, der jedoch nicht so recht gelungen ist. Inzwischen hat Golden die Gruppe verlassen. Er wurde durch Steve Sanders ersetzt.
