Who was/is The Nite Owls ? - CDs, Vinyl LPs, DVD and more
The Nite Owls was an Austin, Texas-based trio consisting of guitarists Luke Owens and Bob Symons, along with bassist Jack True. Despite being a trio, the group is considered to be a western swing band because of the danceable nature of their recordings, their association with similar bands, and their repertoire, which included many jazz and blues titles. In addition, Symons was one of country music's pioneers of the electric guitar, playing impressive, complex, jazz-inspired take-offs on the group's records. Lead singer Owens also had an excellent baritone voice, which was decidedly 'un-hillbilly.' Their version of the traditional murder ballad, Frankie And Johnny, is an unissued title from 1938.
