TheTenor saxophonist Montrose belonged to the West Coast school of cool jazz and was heavily influenced by classical music. At the time, he was thinking primarily about using each instrument in structured chamber arrangements. Montrose was able to achieve his goal of leading a swinging improvised jazz session without being constrained by this rigid structure. Baritone saxophonist Bob Gordon, pianist Paul Moer, bassist Red Mitchell and drummer Shelly Manne perform five Montrose originals paired with popular songs of the era When You Wish Upon a Star and Have You Met Miss Jones.
