Geprägt von der Musikszene von Austin/Texas, kam Moffatt Anfang der 70er Jahre nach Nashville, wo er rasch durch seine außergewöhnlichen Songs auffiel. Zu seinen bekanntesten Liedern gehören Old Flames Can't Hold A Candle To You, Wild Turkey, Slow Movin' Freight Train, Carolina Star und Praise The Lord And Send Me The Money. inzwischen versucht sich Hugh Moffatt auch als Interpret seiner eigenen Songs.
