Leyla McCalla draws inspiration from her past and present. Whether it's her Haitian heritage or her adopted hometown of New Orleans, the bilingual multi-instrumentalist and former member of the Grammy-winning African-American string band Carolina Chocolate Drops has developed a distinctive sound that blends her roots and experiences.

McCalla has produced a multidisciplinary music, dance and theater piece titled Breaking the Thermometer to Hide the Fever, which follows her personal journey as she uncovers the history of Radio Haiti, the first radio station in Haiti to broadcast news in Haitian Kreyol - the voice of the people. By juxtaposing personal and political, anecdotal and journalistic voices, McCalla expresses the unbroken spirit of Haiti's poor marginalized groups, who have survived several centuries of political oppression.

During the process of writing "Breaking the Thermometer to Hide the Fever," McCalla listened to countless archival recordings of interviews with Radio Haiti journalists and wrote "Fort Dimanche" after hearing an interview with a survivor of Duvalier's political prison conducted by Michele Montas, the well-known former journalist and station manager for Radio Haiti.
In the interview, the man described his living conditions, the daily terror and torture to which these political prisoners were subjected, and the events that led to his arrest. This album is a kind of soundtrack to the play, with the songs that Leyla McCalla wrote and performs in this work.
