Geboren 1937 in San Francisco Beinahe hätte der Ex-Sportlehrer seine Talente als Athlet beweisen müssen, denn 1956 sollte er an den Qualifikationskämpfen für die Olympischen Spiele teilnehmen. Dazwischen kam eine Kleinigkeit - ein Auftritt Johnny Mathis' im „440 Club' in San Francisco, bei dem zufällig ein Talentsucher der CBS anwesend war. Er sang, und der Talentsucher honorierte mit einem Vertrag, der Johnny Mathis zu einem Superstar machte.

Seither setzte Mathis Maßstäbe im Showgeschäft: Bisher veröffentlichte Johnny 50 Alben. Er ist der einzige amerikanische Sänger, dem es gelang, gleichzeitig 4 Langspielplatten in der US-Bestsellerliste zu haben. Seine LP „Johnny Mathis Greatest Hits' hielt sich über den Zeitraum von 8 Jahren in den amerikanischen Top 100. So ist es kein Wunder, wenn sich in Mathis' Ranch bei Santa Barbara in Kalifornien die Goldenen Schallplatten im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes stapeln.
