Once a week Harry Marte goes over to his neighbor, a painter. Then they sit together in the studio, talk about the big things that are bothering the world. And about what's bothering them in their own lives. And on the 300-meter-long path through the forest that separates their houses, a song can sometimes glimpse the darkness of the night on the way home. On his new album 'Extra Brut' Harry Marte has put this song with the title Midnight Sky right at the beginning.
But who is Harry Marte? First of all a man of creativity: pictures and words ('I've also written German poems. But most of them were nothing. I'm better with English!') are his métiers. And of course music. Music was already there at the very beginning, he says: 'When I was four years old, I stood at home with my mother's knitting needles and conducted to the music on the radio,'he says with a grin. 'But nobody's allowed to know that anymore.'
Bob Dylan came into his life with puberty. Then came Woodstock, David Crosby and Stephen Stills. 'Easy Rider' made a big impression on him. Later, Chris Whitley. 'I surely am a nature boy,'the singer, guitarist and composer says about himself. He doesn't have a computer at home. But he has the forest right on his doorstep, his 'sheltered adventure.
Vogel, with whom Marte has also worked as a producer for several years, provided the impetus for the current work as a trio. 'We recorded everything live. And usually in one or two tries. Three at the most. If you need a fourth try, you already know it's not going to be anything that day. Then you better continue the next day.'This clarity, almost purity in the music has also helped the album to its title: 'Extra Brut'. Like a good champagne, and with virtually no residual sugar. 'There are no frills,' Harry Marte says of the new record. 'No overdubs, no cuts, just three musicians, a living room and a very good sound engineer!'In the end, we said, 'It is what it is.' And it's beautiful!'
