Harry Marte: Extra Brut (LP, 180g colored Vinyl + Bonus CD)

(CrossCut Records) 9 tracks on gold colored vinyl + 11 tracks on bonus CD.

Austrian Harry Marte recorded his vinyl album 'Extra Brut' with an acoustic trio line-up.
All songs were realized live in the studio and without any overdubs.
Great poetry meets musical purity.
Follow-up project to 2017's 'Little Prayers' released on CrossCut.
Audiophile sound quality, gatefold cover with all lyrics plus bonus CD with two more songs from the recording sessions.

Once a week Harry Marte goes over to his neighbor, a painter. Then they sit together in the studio, talk about the big things that are bothering the world. And about what's bothering them in their own lives. And on the 300-meter-long path through the forest that separates their houses, a song can sometimes glimpse the darkness of the night on the way home. On his new album 'Extra Brut' Harry Marte has put this song with the title Midnight Sky right at the beginning.
But who is Harry Marte? First of all a man of creativity: pictures and words ('I've also written German poems. But most of them were nothing. I'm better with English!') are his métiers. And of course music. Music was already there at the very beginning, he says: 'When I was four years old, I stood at home with my mother's knitting needles and conducted to the music on the radio,' he says with a grin. 'But nobody's allowed to know that anymore.'
Bob Dylan came into his life with puberty. Then came Woodstock, David Crosby and Stephen Stills. 'Easy Rider' made a big impression on him. Later, Chris Whitley. 'I surely am a nature boy,' the singer, guitarist and composer says about himself. He doesn't have a computer at home. But he has the forest right on his doorstep, his 'sheltered adventure.

And the music? It is of somnambulistic beauty and clarity. Interwoven with the blues. And yet completely individual. Full of space. And full of depth. Marte's characterful rasping voice and his flowing folk and blues pickings on the guitar are the constant here.

Sometimes the band is on the move with Alfred Vogel's compelling beats (Walnut Tree), then again carried by the lyrically singing bass (Nightingale) contributed by Raphael Preuschel on his five-string, fretless bass ukulele. 'Raphael is wonderful,' enthuses Harry Marte. 'He didn't want to see any sheet music during the recording. He said he just needed to know what I was singing about! That's when I knew right away it would fit.'

Vogel, with whom Marte has also worked as a producer for several years, provided the impetus for the current work as a trio. 'We recorded everything live. And usually in one or two tries. Three at the most. If you need a fourth try, you already know it's not going to be anything that day. Then you better continue the next day.' This clarity, almost purity in the music has also helped the album to its title: 'Extra Brut'. Like a good champagne, and with virtually no residual sugar. 'There are no frills,' Harry Marte says of the new record. 'No overdubs, no cuts, just three musicians, a living room and a very good sound engineer!' In the end, we said, 'It is what it is.' And it's beautiful!'

In the constellation with his two musical comrades-in-arms, he has found the ideal vehicle for his sometimes fabulously poetic (Once Upon A Time), then again very personal (Tiny Angels) or bitingly commenting on world events (Teatime) songs: In Marte's lyrics rivers can flow backwards, little angels testify to the happiness that accompanies him throughout his life and the devil points out the warlords of the world to their place. 'After all, I can only write about things that move me personally,' says Harry Marte. 'Everything I say and write has to do with me.' - Ralf Deckert, 02/2023
